Just a week or so ago I stumbled upon a Kickstarter by the Brooklyn Grange, an urban farming operation which (despite the name) is located on a rooftop in Queens. Their project was to raise a pile of cash to build an apiary, or bee farm, and I couldn’t keep myself from throwing them a few bucks to build something that cool.
In doing so, I noticed that Brooklyn Grange operates a Community Supported Agriculture project, or CSA. The idea is that people can purchase shares of the farm’s output, receiving weekly shipments of vegetables.
Always looking for ways to get the most out of our grocery money, The Fort decided to buy in. We’re looking forward to bags of fresh produce, starting in mid-May and running through the end of October.
Though it’s a bit pricey up front, we’ve struggled to find good produce in the city. What’s more, we’ve never kept a good supply of vegetables in the home. This CSA arrangement would not only keep our larders stocked, but also force us to cook more and try new recipes in order to get our money’s worth.
We’re excited at the prospect, and I’m especially keen to get my hands on some of that sweet, sweet honey! Mid-may can’t come quickly enough.
